Centrelink Annual Review 1999 - 2000

Corporate Governance

Centrelink's highly skilled Board of Management has the collective experience that provides the vision to drive our organisation in achieving excellence.

Centrelink and the Board of Management

Centrelink is a Commonwealth Government agency and a mainstream Australian Public Service organisation. All legislation for the operation of Commonwealth departments and agencies applies to Centrelink.

Centrelink is a Statutory Authority operating under the Commonwealth Services Delivery Agency Act 1997. Our financial accountability is managed and reported in accordance with the Financial Management and Accountability Act 1997. Centrelink staff are employed under the Public Service Act 1999, which replaced the Public Service Act 1922 on 5 December 1999.

In accordance with legislation, Centrelink's Board of Management consists of:

  • the Chairman, Mr John Pascoe AM (Mr Robin Marrett retired on 26 July 2000)
  • the CEO, Ms Sue Vardon
  • Non-Executive Members: Ms Chris Gillies, Mr John Thame, and Mr Don Fraser (Mr Philip Pearce passed away on 22 October 1999)
  • Principal officers of the Commonwealth: Dr David Rosalky, Secretary FaCS and Dr Peter Shergold AM, Secretary DEWRSB.

As the driving force of the organisation, the Board meets monthly to set the strategic direction for Centrelink and to discuss the progress of Centrelink's operations.

Board Committees

Three committees report to the Board. The Chairman and Non-Executive Members participate in at least one of these committees, while the CEO attends all committee meetings.

The Audit Committee ensures that appropriate financial management and internal controls operate within Centrelink.

The Information and Technology Committee provides advice and direction to the Board on strategic information technology likely to impact on Centrelink's ability to deliver services.

The Quality Committee's responsibility is to assure the Board that the service delivery is of the highest standard and that Centrelink remains the Government's and the community's first choice as the provider of Commonwealth Government services.
