Travel between King Island and Mainland Australia
Special conditions apply to vehicle rebates for travel between King Island and the Australian mainland because the current King Island ferry service is not able to carry passengers. On other Bass Strait ferry services, passenger vehicles must be accompanied by their drivers to be eligible for a rebate.
As a King Island traveller, you are regarded as accompanying your vehicle if you travel with a commercial airline, on or around the same day that your vehicle is being transported by sea. You must also fly in the same direction as your vehicle.
Eligible passenger vehicles
Eligible passenger vehicles include motor cars, buses, motorhomes, campervans, motorcycles and bicycles. Caravans (including camper-trailers), towed by eligible passenger vehicles, are also eligible for the rebate.
Claiming the rebate
There is no need to claim the rebate. You will get the rebate as a direct reduction in the freight rate charged for your vehicle by the ferry operator. However, you do need to complete a Driver's Declaration form, with details of your flight (airline, flight number, ticket number and date of travel). You will be asked to provide this completed form to the shipping line's representative when loading your vehicle.
Motor-cyclists who are obliged to use freight forwarders to transport their motorcycles between King Island and the Australian mainland may claim the rebate directly from Centrelink, using a Claim for Reimbursement - Motorcycle form. Details of where to send your claim are included on the form.
