Tasmanian Freight Equalisation Scheme - northbound goods
The Northbound component of the Scheme applies to eligible goods produced or manufactured in Tasmania for permanent use or for sale on the Australian mainland.
Eligible commodities
Eligible Northbound goods are listed in Schedule 1 to the Ministerial Directions for the operation of the Scheme. You can view a copy of the Ministerial Directions on the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government website.
To be eligible for assistance with freight costs, Northbound goods must:
- be manufactured in Tasmania for permanent use or for sale on the Australian mainland
- be transported across Bass Strait by sea as "non bulk" cargo (ie: not shipped loose in the hold of a ship without any unitisation or packaging)
- incur a freight cost disadvantage.
Ineligible commodities
The following Northbound commodities are ineligible for assistance:
- goods manufactured on the mainland or outside Australia, unless they have undergone a manufacturing process in Tasmania
- goods which were intended for export from Australia, at the time of shipment from Tasmania, or at the time of first sale on the Australian mainland.
Commodity codes
A list of eligible Northbound commodities, including the commodity codes to be used when claiming assistance, can be obtained from Tasmanian Assistance Services, Centrelink.
