What is the Centrelink Alumni program?

The Centrelink Alumni program offers a unique opportunity for former and retired staff to keep in touch with Centrelink colleagues, events and employment opportunities.

Why was the Centrelink Alumni program created?

The Centrelink Alumni program will connect the valuable skills and knowledge of former employees with Centrelink’s current business priorities and opportunities. The program aims to build a beneficial partnership between former staff and Centrelink.

Why join the Centrelink Alumni?

The Alumni Program enables former and retired employees to maintain their relationship with Centrelink if they choose to do so. Centrelink has a lot to offer former staff members, including:

  • access to flexible potential short term employment opportunities
  • opportunities to maintain professional knowledge, share expertise and mentor colleagues
  • opportunities to maintain contact with friends and colleagues through social events and the Alumni network

Why have a Centrelink Alumni?

An Alumni program offers Centrelink the opportunity to access the skills and knowledge of former employees. Former staff have a lot to offer Centrelink. The Centrelink Alumni program will:

  • expand the resources available to Centrelink, and provide staff and managers with the right people for temporary backfilling of skilled positions
  • provide access to the valuable corporate knowledge, skills and experience that have been developed by former and retired staff
  • build a community of informed and interested former staff to assist Centrelink achieve its goals and strengthen its links to the wider community.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What if I have taken a redundancy package?

The usual restrictions apply for employing Alumni if they have received a redundancy benefit from an APS Agency or non-APS Commonwealth employer within the previous twelve months.

Further information on restrictions on re-employment is available in the APSC Circular No 2003/5: Amendment to the PSC's Directions on the engagement of persons who have received a redundancy benefit from Commonwealth employment. Visit the Australian Public Service Commission (APSC) website at www.apsc.gov.au for more information.

Will this affect my superannuation entitlements?

Being an Alumni member will not affect your superannuation. However, if you gain employment through the Alumni you will need to check with your superannuation provider to ensure that your entitlements are not adversely affected.

Am I guaranteed employment through the Alumni?

The Alumni will only be used for vacancies that are appropriate short-term opportunities. Centrelink will select Alumni for employment opportunities based on merit and selections will be made without patronage or favouritism. Based on this, employment for Alumni member is not guaranteed.

How do I join the Centrelink Alumni?

Former and retired Centrelink employees can elect to join the Centrelink Alumni Program. People can join the Alumni by downloading and completing the attachment below and sending it through to alumni@centrelink.gov.au.

Download the Alumni Registration Form.

Your details will then be authenticated and transferred to the Centrelink Alumni database. As an Alumni member, you will receive a regular eNewsletter to keep you up to date with Centrelink news, updates and social events.

What are the terms and conditions for Alumni employment?

As a member of the Centrelink Alumni, your employment will be under the same terms and conditions as non-ongoing employees. Alumni can work up to 100 days (block or aggregate) per financial year.
