North Queensland Cyclone Disaster - Cyclones Monica and Larry
On 20 March 2006 the Far North Queensland coast was hit by a Category 5 cyclone, Tropical Cyclone Larry and Cyclone Monica. While there was no loss of life, a significant number of homes and businesses in the area were affected.
In response to the devastation caused by Tropical Cyclones Monica and Larry, the then Prime Minister, the Hon John Howard, announced a number of support measures to assist victims of the cyclone. The Australian Government contribution to the Far North Queensland relief and recovery effort was in excess of $100 million.
