Changes to the Proof of Identity (POI) requirements, effective from 17 September 2001 have made it simpler for you to prove your identity to Centrelink.

What do I need to do if I claim a payment or service?

When claiming a payment or service from Centrelink that requires you to prove your identity, you must provide Centrelink with original documents from the approved list of acceptable documents listed in the Proving your identity to Centrelink form.

If you are claiming Parenting Payment (Partnered), Health Care Card for low income earners or Drought Assistance your partner must also provide Proof of Identity.

If you are claiming Carer Allowance or Carer Payment, the person being cared for must also provide Proof Of Identity.

What documents can Centrelink accept as Proof of Identity?

The Proving your identity to Centrelink form lists the services that require Proof of Identity and the level of Proof of Identity that is required for each of these services.

Are non-Australian documents accepted?

Non-Australian documents may be accepted as Proof of Identity, however they need to be translated into English. Centrelink can translate these documents for you at no cost.

What happens if I don't have enough approved documents?

If you cannot provide Centrelink with enough documents, you should telephone us or contact your nearest Centrelink Customer Service Centre.
