How do I claim Austudy?

If you:

  • are studying full-time or planning to study full-time in the future, or
  • undertaking a full-time apprenticeship or traineeship

you can make a claim online. You should commence your claim online as soon as possible to ensure you are paid from the earliest possible date. You can also lodge your Online Claim 13 weeks prior to qualification or commencing studies.

What steps should I take?

Step 1

You should download the Claim Information for Youth Allowance and Austudy form as this contains important information about your claim that you must read before lodging your claim for Youth Allowance. You will also be asked to declare that you are aware of the Privacy notice contained within the Claim Information for Youth Allowance and Austudy form in the Customer's Declaration section of your claim for Youth Allowance.

If you are studying full time or undertaking a full time Australian Apprenticeship you should take the following steps. If you have not recently been receiving Austudy either:

Step 3

Throughout the claim you will be asked a series of questions about your circumstances. This information is required to assess your entitlement. The types of questions asked will include the bank account that you would like to have your payments made into and your tax file number.

Step 4

When you complete the questions you will be asked to review your responses and accept a declaration stating that the information that you have provided is correct.

You will then be advised of the verification documents and forms that you will need to provide to Centrelink. You are given 14 days to provide these documents but the sooner Centrelink has them the sooner your claim will be processed.

What information do I need to make a claim?

During the claim process you will need your personal details such as your bank account details and your tax file number. Once you have submitted your claim you will need to provide Proof of Identity. You may also be asked to provide proof of your income and, depending on your circumstances, your partner's income. For more information, go to Factors Affecting Payment Rates and Eligibility. Are there any other forms that need to be completed?

So that your claim can be accurately assessed based on your (or your partner's) personal circumstances, you may need to download and complete some additional forms. These forms will be listed as part of the online claim service.
