Changes to Carer Payment (caring for a child under 16 years) from 1 July 2009
The Australian Government recognises the importance of improving the support and services available to carers. From 1 July 2009, changes have been introduced to Carer Payment (caring for a child under 16 years), which will allow more carer to access carer Payment and will improve support for existing customers.

Changes to Carer Payment (caring for a child under 16 years)
- A new assessment process to measure care required by and care provided to a child with a severe disability or severe medical condition.
- Carers of children who require care for periods of 3 months or more can now be paid on a short term or episodic basis.
- If you are caring for at least 1 child and another person whose combined care needs are equivalent to a child with a severe medical condition you may qualify for Carer Payment.
- Automatic eligibility for Carer Allowance (caring for a child under 16 years).
- Carer Allowance and Carer Payment (caring for a child under 16 years) can now be paid for an indefinite period of time while you are caring for your child in hospital.
- Revised arrangements for children with a terminal condition.
- Separated parents who are caring for 2 or more children with a severe disability or severe medical condition may now be eligible for Carer Payment.

Who is affected by the change?
Current carer customers who are caring for children under 16 years may benefit from the changes. Carers of children who have not previously been eligible may also benefit from the changes.

What do I need to do?
If you are already being paid Carer Payment (caring for a child under 16 years) you do not need to do anything. If you or someone else is not getting Carer Allowance for each child that qualifies you for this payment, you will automatically receive Carer Allowance for each of those children.
If you are not receiving Carer Payment but think you may be eligible, even if you have applied before, telephone Centrelink on 13 2717 or visit your nearest Centrelink Customer Service Centre.
