Special Disability Trusts:

Future planning for sons and daughters with a severe disability

This type of trust is established for succession planning by immediate family members for the future care and accommodation needs of a person with a severe disability.

The Government has introduced this initiative to assist immediate family members of people with severe disabilities to make a private financial provision, through a Special Disability Trust, for the future care and accommodation needs of that person with a severe disability.

This initiative allows immediate family members, of Age Pension age, to give to a complying Special Disability Trust (SDT) and receive up to the value of $500 000 (combined) exempt from the deprivation provisions.

These include age pension age customers from Centrelink and the Department of Veteran’s Affairs.
