Turbo-charged jobs supermarket comes to Illawarra
New South Wales media release
Monday, 15 March 2010
The wait is over for businesses looking for staff and job seekers looking for opportunities as the ‘turbo-charged jobs supermarket’ that is the Keep Australia Working Jobs Expo, comes to the Illawarra on Thursday 25 March at the WIN Entertainment Centre.
The Keep Australia Working Jobs Expo initiative introduced by the Australian Government in October last year has proven a great success, with up 700 exhibitors providing over 2,500 employment opportunities for job seekers.
More than 60 exhibitors have already registered for the Illawarra Jobs Expo, bringing with them hundreds of full time, part time and casual jobs, as well as apprenticeships and graduate positions in many varied fields of employment.
Illawarra Jobs Expo Coordinator, Centrelink’s Michele Kutup, said the jobs expo brings great opportunities for both employers and local job seekers.
"The Illawarra Jobs Expo is a practical way for employers, industry groups, recruitment and training providers as well as Federal, State and Local Government to connect directly with local job seekers," Ms Kutup said.
"The expo’s a one-stop jobs supermarket where job seekers and employers can engage in person. It’s about building relationships, seeing the qualities in people first hand and gauging what employers and job seekers have to offer one another.
"No sending your resume over the internet here, it’s about real jobs opportunities right now on the day!"
Local business, Seawind Catamarans, whose headquarters are based in Wollongong, has already registered as an exhibitor.
Seawind Catamarans,’ Mike Rees, said the jobs expo will provide his company with a great opportunity to raise awareness of the benefits of a career in the finance industry.
"Seawind sees the Centrelink jobs expo as an opportunity, not only to reach further afield with our current recruitment drive, but also to raise our company profile within the community for future employment opportunities. We often find that the general public don’t know who we are or what we do at Seawind and the jobs expo is a great opportunity to put our face out there and to showcase our business to potential future employees,"Mr Rees said.
"We currently employ 17 Shipwright apprentices, and the jobs expo is a great opportunity to showcase our trade and ensure we have the best calibre of candidates wanting to join our team either through an apprenticeship, as a tradesman or trade assistant.
"Seawind Catamarans is a company that employs many trades but at its core we rely on the skills of our shipwrights. With few shipwrights in the area, the jobs expo is a great opportunity to showcase the range of skills a shipwright has and the career path it can lead to within the marine industry.
"We encourage other local companies, both big and small, to get behind the jobs expo and support local people who want to work," he said.
Entry for exhibitors and job seekers is free and job seekers are encouraged to bring a current one page resume on the day.
Jobs Expo Ambassador and Rugby League great, Wendell Sailor will be at the jobs expo to share his experiences, along with a host of other entertainment.
The Illawarra ‘Keep Australia Working’ Centrelink Jobs Expo is on Thursday 25 March from 10 am–3 pm at the WIN Entertainment Centre.
