Centrelink is conducting a series of free seminars in Alice Springs this month to assist those wanting information on investing for the future.
The free seminars are designed to help people be more confident with investing, financial issues and assist in understanding pensions.
Run by Centrelink’s Financial Information Service, the Getting Started seminars are aimed at all ages and focus on providing information on Financial Fitness, Understanding Property Investments and Centrelink payments and services.
Centrelink FIS Officer for the NT and Kimberley WA, Terry Smith says the seminars are a free and independent service open to everyone.
"You don’t have to be a Centrelink customer to attend one of these seminars which assist people to achieve a better retirement lifestyle through the best use of their own resources," Terry says.
"FIS officers are in the unique position of being able to offer unbiased financial information to members of the local community.
"Our aim is to help people gain confidence to deal with financial matters and to be able to understand their own financial affairs. The seminars alert people to the risk levels of different financial strategies and products and explain the role of financial industry professionals.
"It’s never too early or too late to start planning for your financial future."
But, Terry points out, FIS officers are not financial planners.
"We don’t sell advice or investment products and FIS officers aren’t able to make decisions on anyone’s pension or financial choices," Terry said.
Light refreshments are provided at all seminars.
