New interpreter service at Mount Gravatt Centrelink
Queensland media release
Thursday, 11 February 2009
A new interpreter service for Dari and Persian (Farsi) languages has started at Mount Gravatt Centrelink.
Mount Gravatt Multicultural Services Officer, Zab Ndizeye, says the new service follows an increase in migrants in the area who speak these languages.
"Dari and Farsi are languages that are predominantly spoken by people from Afghanistan and Iran and we’ve had an increasing number of requests for interpreters from customers who speak these languages," Zab said.
The interpreter service will be conducted by Ms Badihe Mohebbi every Wednesday at Mount Gravatt Centrelink from 10 am to 1 pm.
Zab says Badihe is very experienced in helping new migrants.
"Badihe has lived in Australia for 40 years and has been working as an interpreter for 15 years," he said.
"Badihe has strong links with the Afghani and Iranian community and previously worked at the Migrant Resource Centre as a social worker.
"I urge all those in the community who speak these languages and who may want to discuss Centrelink-related matters or queries to attend the office on Wednesdays while Badihe is available."
Mount Gravatt Centrelink is located at 57 Sanders Street, Upper Mount Gravatt.
