Centrelink stocking shelves at BayCISS

The shelves at the Bayside Community Information and Support Service (BayCISS) have received a much needed restock, thanks to the donation of non-perishable food items and toiletries by staff at Moorabbin Centrelink Call Centre.
In support of National Homeless Persons’ Week (August 2 – 8), staff were encouraged to give up a small luxury for a day, such as a coffee, and instead buy an item to donate to the drive. Centrelink Social Worker, Faye Dennehy, said the response from staff was once again overwhelming.
"We ran a similar donation drive last year, with a fantastic response, and I was so pleased to see that staff were again so willing to get behind the drive – and with such enthusiasm," Faye said.
"During Homeless Persons’ Week, we had a number of boxes located in the tea rooms. By the end of the week, the donation boxes were overflowing with food, pet food, toiletries, washing powders, and other non perishable items."
"Staff also took it upon themselves to organise a bake-off, which raised in excess of $500. We were able to use this money to purchase more expensive goods like razors, nappies and public transport tickets."
The theme for National Homeless Persons’ Week 2010 was ‘Will you be homeless in 2020’, in line with the Government’s goal of halving homelessness by 2020.
"Homelessness is everyone’s issue, and Homeless Persons’ Week is a very special event for the staff at Moorabbin Call," said Faye.
"The nature of our work shows us that homelessness can affect anybody at any time, just through a change of income, loss of employment, or a relationship breakdown – staff have the opportunity to reflect on what they can do to service this vulnerable community.
"It is quite humbling to think of the impact individuals can have on a small organisation, and how this translates to servicing individuals and families who are far less fortunate than us."
