It’s all systems go for the Dandenong ‘Keep Australia Working’ Centrelink’s Jobs Expo being held at the General Merchandise Hall, Dandenong Market on Thursday 15 April.
Preparations are well underway, transforming the new market place into a market for jobs for an expected crowd of up to 3,000 job seekers.
Centrelink’s Dandenong Jobs Expo Coordinator, Lisa Nelson, said excitement and support for the event has been building for weeks.
"The interest from business, registered training organisations and Jobs Services Australia providers, as well as from the general public, has been very encouraging," Ms Nelson said.
"Over 80 exhibitors have already registered to take part in the expo, bringing with them hundreds of real jobs for local job seekers, and we’re expecting even more interest over coming weeks."
Ms Nelson said the ‘Keep Australia Working’ Centrelink Jobs Expos were unique in the way they achieve real outcomes for job seekers.
"From the 9 Jobs Expos held across the country so far, over 3,000 job seekers are now engaged with employers, and we’re expecting the same positive outcomes from the expo here in Dandenong." Ms Nelson said.
"This expo will be a one-stop jobs supermarket where job seekers and employers can engage in person. It’ll be about building relationships, seeing the qualities in people first hand and gauging what both employers and job seekers have to offer one another.
"No sending your resume over the internet here, this expo’s about real jobs opportunities right now on the day."
City of Greater Dandenong Mayor, Jim Memeti, said it would be the first time the new General Merchandise Hall would be used to host an event outside of market trading hours.
"What better way to showcase our new venue than with jobs market at the Market," Mayor Memeti said.
"I believe this Jobs Expo is just what Melbourne’s South East region needs to shake-off the effects of the GFC. It’ll provide real job opportunities for local people."
Ms Nelson said Centrelink is proud to announce that Australia’s favourite ‘chippie’ and television personality, Scott Cam will be the Jobs Expo Ambassador and guest MC on the day.
"I’m encouraging everyone to come along, bring a current one page resume, have a chat with the exhibitors and Scott Cam, and take advantage of the many activities on offer,"Ms Nelson said.
"Aside from the exhibitors and the jobs, we’ll have information seminars and a super sausage sizzle. What’s more it’s all free!"
The Centrelink Jobs Expo will be held at the General Merchandise Hall, Dandenong Market on Thursday 15 April from 10 am to 3 pm.
