Free barbeque, beer and ... a chat?

The men of Stanhope are being encouraged to drop by for the launch of the Stanhope Men’s Group on Wednesday, 30 June.
Centrelink Rural Social Worker, Emma Petersen, has been working alongside Kyabram Community and Learning Centre Drought Support Worker, Allanah Jenkins, and the Stanhope Business District Centre, planning a night for the men of Stanhope.
"The idea is to bring the local men together again for a chat and a laugh over a beer on a regular basis," Emma said.
"Rural life can be isolating and you can quickly forget that you’re not in this alone. Groups such as this can really go a long way in helping to build a sense of community.
"It’s a great way to relax and an opportunity to meet other men in the region – to network, problem solve and just chew the fat."
The group will be joined by special guest speaker Les Twentyman – well known youth social worker and author.
"The aim of the launch night is to discuss the importance of support like the Stanhope Men’s Group," explained Emma.
"Numerous studies have shown that a sense of connectedness – even just an opportunity to chat with friends – is really important for mental health and maintaining local friendships.
"We’re also looking to rally volunteers to become part of the Stanhope Men’s Group Working Party, who will meet every few months to brainstorm guest speakers and topics of conversation.
"Of course, you don’t have to join the working group. We’re more than happy for people to just drop by on a monthly basis.
"There will be free barbeque, beer and some great give-aways on the night. Bring your mates – we want as many men as possible to get involved!"
The group will meet at the Stanhope Bowling Club on Wednesday, 30 June at 6.30pm.
