Media release (Victoria):
A good start to the day for everyone
Monday, 29 November 2010
Albury Centrelink is joining nation-wide Social Inclusion Week celebrations by participating in a breakfast club at James Fallon High School.
Centrelink Manager, Helen Volkers, said that staff from Albury Centrelink will be helping Indigenous children from James Fallon High School and nearby schools to cook breakfast for the other students on Tuesday, 30 November.
“We all know that breakfast is one of the most important meals of the day, but for a variety of reasons an alarming number of children come to school on an empty stomach,” Helen said.
“James Fallon High School has been running a breakfast club daily, with the aim to provide a healthy breakfast as well as to raise awareness about healthy eating habits and the importance of eating breakfast.
“Albury Centrelink staff were really keen to contribute to this great initiative and it was a perfect way to show our support for Social Inclusion Week.”
Helen said Social Inclusion Week is a call to action for all Australians to reconnect and be inclusive of all cultures, nationalities and the disadvantaged.
“Social Inclusion Week encourages everyone to connect with their local communities, workmates, family and friends, to build relationships and support networks, and contribute to addressing isolation and loneliness by supporting people who may be unable help themselves,” Helen said.
“What many people don’t realise is that the work Centrelink does in the community extends far beyond the 4 walls of the Centrelink Customer Service Centre.
“The theme for Social Inclusion Week 2010 is ‘Get involved. Get connected!’ and that’s exactly what this breakfast club achieves.”
