Wangaratta community invited to celebrate NAIDOC Week
Victoria media release
Monday, 28 June 2010
Wangaratta Centrelink Customer Service Centre is inviting the community to join them at an information morning tea in recognition of NAIDOC Week.
"We are inviting local Indigenous community organisations, as well as organisations that support our Indigenous community, to come together and share details of their organisation and the Indigenous services or support they offer," Wangaratta Centrelink Manager, Kirsty Beecroft, said.
"It’s an opportunity to find out about the services and support available to the Indigenous community in Wangaratta, as well as to discuss ways that we can work together to improve services and support now and into the future.
"We will finish our morning together with a delicious morning tea."
NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia each July to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. The 2010 National NAIDOC theme is 'Unsung Heroes - Closing the Gap by Leading Their Way'.
"The theme 'Unsung heroes' recognises the part played by the quiet achievers in the Indigenous community, both now and in the past. This includes efforts made toward 'closing the gap'," Kirsty said.
"The gaps that need to be closed include gaps in knowledge and understanding.
"Sharing of local information is a big part of bridging the knowledge gap, so that’s what the morning is all about.
"We’d love as many local organisations as possible to become involved."
Organisations are also encouraged to provide an A3 sized poster to be displayed at Wangaratta Centrelink throughout NAIDOC Week.
The morning tea will take place at 10 am on Monday, 5 July at Wangaratta Centrelink Customer Service Centre, 25 Faithful Street, Wangarratta.
Organisations wishing to participate in this event should contact Gaye Mathews on 5723 4219 by 4 pm on Friday, 2 July.
