Sunbury local and Centrelink Senior Customer Service Adviser, Teresa Valdes, has set herself one marathon of a challenge for 2010.
On 10 October, Teresa will be running the Melbourne Marathon in memory of her father, Tim O’Callaghan, who passed away from MND in 2007. She hopes to raise awareness of MND and much needed funds for MND Victoria.
"Before Dad passed away, I revealed to him that it was my goal in life to complete a full marathon before I turn 40," Teresa said.
"I’m not and never have been a runner, but with this year’s Melbourne Marathon falling three days before the third anniversary of Dad’s passing I couldn’t resist the challenge.
"He was also so encouraging and supportive of me – he never doubted my ability to achieve this."
Teresa said that there are currently over 1,300 people living with MND in Australia, and despite the fact that more than one person dies from MND every day, the disease is still largely unheard of.
"There is no cure for MND, only a drug which has been shown to extend life expectancy by just 6 to 12 months," Teresa said.
"One of the saddest aspects of the disease is that people retain their cognitive abilities and they are painfully aware, as my Dad was, of the deterioration of their bodies.
"Of course, the illness doesn’t just affect the person with the disease – it affects the whole family. We watched helplessly as a once strong, active man became a shadow of his former self. It was hardest on Mum, who was Dad’s carer until the end."
All money raised by Teresa will go to MND Victoria to support them in assisting people with MND and their families. Teresa said she’s been overwhelmed by the support she’s already received, particularly from her colleagues at Centrelink.
"I feel so fortunate to work for an employer that is so supportive of its staff.
"In addition to private donations, a casual day was organised to raise funds for MND – I’ve already received nearly $700!
"The most touching part though has been the emails and phone calls I’ve received from my colleagues – including staff I’ve never met before – just to wish me luck and give me encouragement.
"Training for a marathon sure isn’t easy, but support like this is what keeps me going."
Credit card donations can be made to Teresa via the My Cause fundraising website. All donations over $2 are tax deductable and receipts are available on request.
