Youth Week celebrations in Colac
Victoria media release
Friday, 9 April 2010
Young people in Colac aged 12 to 25 are invited to an action-packed special free event for National Youth Week organised by Centrelink with the support of Youth Connections, Youth Development, Colac Police Youth Liaison Team and the Street Surfer Bus project.
The Street Surfer Bus will be at Memorial Square in Colac on Friday, 16 April, with information on local youth programs, activities, training and employment services.
"We’re really excited that the Street Surfer Bus is visiting Colac," said Centrelink Social Worker, Narelle Smart.
"The bus has computer games, a TV and DVD player, DJ sound system and sports equipment. Young people can talk to a youth worker there and get information."
Centrelink will be on hand to tell visitors about payments and services for young people.
"Youth Week is the perfect time for local young people to find out about important recent changes to Youth Allowance and other student payments," Narelle said.
"Some of the changes are already in place from April 2010, including a Student Start-up Scholarship for full-time university students receiving Youth Allowance, Austudy and ABSTUDY."
The alcohol and drug free event includes a barbecue and soft drinks - with plenty of other activities to keep visitors of all ages entertained.
