Centrelink support for the homeless

Centrelink Social Workers, Nicky Latham and Samanthia Wild, will be participating in Hedland’s Winter Sleep Out and Walk Against Homelessness to mark National Homeless Persons’ Week.
Nicky said she is looking forward to the sleep out, despite some apprehension.
“The sleep out and walk is organised to raise awareness about homelessness,” Nicky said.
“I am a little bit nervous about the experience, but I think it is important to raise awareness in the community about this very important issue.”
The sleep out and walk is one of a number of activities Centrelink staff across the country are participating in to recognise National Homeless Persons’ Week which runs from Monday 2 to Friday 8 August 2010.
Nicky said Centrelink assists homeless people in many ways.
"Centrelink is committed to providing assistance to the homeless, through income support and individual assistance from Centrelink Customer Service Advisers and specialist staff such as social workers," Nicky said.
"Centrelink has around 600 social workers, working in over 300 Centrelink customer service centres and call centres. Last year, social workers had over 58,000 contacts with people who were homeless or who were experiencing accommodation issues.
"I urge anyone who is seeking support to visit the Centrelink South Hedland Customer Service Centre or speak to a Centrelink Social Worker over the phone by calling 13 1021."
