Students paint up a storm for Families Week:

New South Wales Media Release
Thursday, 11 May 2006

Tomorrow’s giants of the art world will display their works in a special exhibition at Hurstville Centrelink as part of this year’s National Families Week celebrations (14-21 May).

Local high school students have been given the chance to win prizes as well as showcase their work as part of an art competition to celebrate the importance of family.

Hurstville Centrelink’s Melissa Renshaw said the art comes from students in years 10, 11 and 12 and is based on what family means to them.

“In 2006 National Families Week places a special emphasis on families with children aged 12-18 years, so we thought having an exhibition of artwork from the students reflects the occasion perfectly,” said Melissa.

“Young people are our greatest resource and Families Australia is highlighting the importance of taking extra family time for TLC - talking, listening, connecting and encouraging young people to reach their potential.

“Centrelink is proudly supporting this year’s National Families Week through our network of customer service centres and is joining in the celebrations by coordinating and participating in local community events.”

The winner of the art competition will be decided by Jennifer Harding from Hazelhurst Art Gallery and will be announced by Families Australia CEO Brian Babington at a special ceremony at Hurstville Centrelink on Wednesday, 17 May. Families Australia is the national peak organisation dedicated to promoting the needs and interests of families.

Cash prizes and a mobile phone have been donated by local organisations and will be given away to the top three artists.

“Local organisations such as Employment Plus, The Pole Depot Neighbourhood Centre and Work Directions Australia have generously donated more then $500 cash and a mobile phone to help celebrate Families Week and recognise the talent of these young artists,” said Melissa.
