Centrelink committed to cyclone affected residents
Queensland Media Release
Wednesday, 12 April 2006
Centrelink has reassured residents in the Cyclone Larry affected areas of Far North Queensland it will continue to provide assistance for as long as required.
"We are strongly committed to helping people re-establish their lives," said Centrelink spokesman Ken Wilson.
"In fact, Centrelink staff are continuing to help with the recovery effort and will stay as long as required.
"For example, Centrelink staff are located today in Atherton, Babinda, Cairns, Innisfail, Mareeba and Tully. To assist farmers, staff are also located at the Malanda Dairyfarmers office.
"Social workers are in the area providing counselling and other support to cyclone victims.
"Centrelink has delivered payments on behalf of the Australian Governement of close to $70 million, including the $1000 ex-gratia payment and business grants.
"While the focus of Centrelink’s work will change in accordance to the needs of the community, Centrelink’s commitment to the provision of emergency relief has not, and will not, waiver.
"With the number of claims for ex-gratia now in decline, specialist staff are presently door knocking to promote the business assistance schemes. Centrelink is also working closely with farming groups.
"Centrelink’s commitment to people affected by the cyclone will continue over the Easter break through the Cyclone relief hotline 180 2002, which will be available 9am to 4pm from Good Friday to Easter Monday.
"Since the time the cyclone hit, Centrelink has up to 400 staff working tirelessly to help cyclone affected communities back on that feet.
"Residents of this area can be assured we will not leave while there is work still to be done."
