Eligibility
You may be eligible for ABSTUDY assistance if you are a student or Australian Apprentice and meet the primary eligibility criteria for ABSTUDY.
To meet the primary ABSTUDY eligibility criteria you must:
- be an Australian citizen
- be an Australian Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person
- be a student or Australian Apprentice
- not be not receiving any other government assistance to study or complete an apprenticeship, traineeship or trainee apprenticeship, and
- normally live in Australia.
If you are a student, you must be either:
- enrolled in an approved* course of study, or
- undertaking an approved Testing and Assessment activity to that will determine your suitability to undertake an approved course or suitability to the Indigenous Youth Mobility Programme (IYMP).
If you are an Australian Apprentice you will need:
- a current Commonwealth Registration Number that relates to a full-time apprenticeship, /traineeship or trainee apprenticeship under the Australian Apprenticeships Scheme.
*Approved education providers include:
- government schools, including those offering distance education or correspondence courses
- non-government education institutions offering primary, ungraded, secondary or special courses accredited by the relevant state or territory education authority
- senior secondary colleges
- TAFE institutions
- higher education providers, and
- correctional services authorities providing secondary or tertiary level Indigenous special course/s for students in Lawful Custody.
Approved courses may be studied by:
- attendance at classes
- distance education or correspondence
- external studies
- open learning
- flexible delivery, or
- a mode of study featuring a combination of the above.
