Income and assets tests for Austudy

Personal income test

As an Austudy customer you can earn up to $236 per fortnight before tax before your payment is affected.

Income between $236 and $316 reduces your fortnightly payment by 50 cents in the dollar.

Income above $316 reduces your payment by 60 cents in the dollar.



Income bank

Austudy customers who are full-time students are able to accumulate up to $6,000 of any unused portion of their fortnightly income free area. The accumulated income bank credits can be used to offset any income earned that exceeds the fortnightly income free area.

Australian Apprentices can accumulate up to $1,000 of any unused portion of their fortnightly income free area.


Assets test

As an applicant for Austudy you will be assessed against an assets test:


Payment may be deferred if your liquid assets exceed:

  • $2,500 if you are single, or
  • $5,000 if you are a couple, or single with dependants.

Hardship provisions may apply to the personal assets test.
