Residence requirements
To qualify for Bereavement Allowance you must be in Australia on the day you lodge your claim.
You must also satisfy at least one of the following:
- you are an Australian resident and you have been living in Australia for at least 104 weeks, or
- you have a qualifying residence exemption, for example you are a refugee, or
- you were both Australian residents at the time your partner died.
Note: An Australian resident is a person who resides in Australia, and is:
- an Australian citizen, or
- the holder of a permanent resident visa, or
- a special category visa holder who is a protected SCV holder.
