When to claim
You should register an intent to claim for Carer Payment (caring for a child under 16 years) as soon as possible.
You should then submit your claim within 14 days so that we can pay you from the earliest possible date.
Note: You need to read the following important information before you lodge your claim:
Claiming with forms
For a Carer Payment (caring for a child under 16 years) claim form, you can:
- refer to Carer Allowance and Carer Payment (caring for a child under 16 years) claim forms and information
- phone us on 13 2717
- visit your nearest Centrelink Customer Service Centre
Documentation
Once you submit your claim you will need to provide proof of identity.
You also need to get a medical report about the child you are caring for and provide details of how much time you spend caring for them. Phone us on 13 2717 and we will tell you which medical report is most appropriate for your circumstances.
We will tell you if there are other documents and forms you need to provide. You will need to submit these within 14 days. The sooner we receive your documents, the sooner we can process your claim.
Note: You can use these forms to claim Carer Allowance (caring for a child under 16 years) at the same time. If you qualify for Carer Payment you will generally receive Carer Allowance automatically.
Claim outcome
We will send you a letter advising if your claim is successful. If you are eligible for Carer Payment, the letter will tell you when your payment starts and how much you will get.
If you disagree with a decision we make
You always have the right to appeal any decision made by Centrelink.
