How do I Qualify for Utilities Allowance?

Utilities Allowance comprises of four instalments per year and is paid to:

  • all age pension age customers on a qualifying income support payment
  • customers of any age receiving Disability Support Pension, Carer Payment, Partner Allowance, Wife Pension, Widow B Pension, Bereavement Allowance or Widow Allowance.

Qualification is determined on 20 January, 20 March, 20 September and 20 December each year. Utilities Allowance was first paid in March 2005 to age pension age customers and extended in September 2006 to customers in receipt of Partner Allowance and Widow Allowance. From 20 March 2008 it was extended further to Disability Support Pension and Carer Payment customers.

You must also meet certain residence requirements, and not have already received Utilities Allowance or Seniors Concession Allowance for the same quarter during the financial year.
