Child Support Agency

The Child Support Agency is part of the Department of Human Services and is responsible for the administration, assessment and collection of child support payments, including Centrelink customers receiving Family Tax Benefit.

The Child Support Agency can collect child support payable under court orders or registered agreements. When child support is paid through the agency, the amount may be deducted from the paying parent's wage or salary (together with tax) or paid directly to the agency. Child support payments may be collected from customers' pension and benefit payments.

Any child support payments made to the Child Support Agency are distributed by the Child Support Agency into the customer's bank, building society or credit union account.

The Child Support Agency also works out the amount of child support payable under a legislative formula. Any party with care of the child can apply to the agency for an assessment of child support. This person does not have to be the parent of the child.
