Technical Information

To help you understand the best way to view and use our site, see the technical information below. The site has been designed to be a simple, quick way to gather the information you need.

Page Layout.

Most pages are divided into six main areas:

  • Header - is the Centrelink logo and an image that changes to show the different parts of the site.
  • Site Navigation - appears under the header image as text links comprising the top level global navigation.
  • Section Info - This has a small image showing the name of the section.
  • Section Navigation - the section navigation are text links that will always appear with that section.
  • Page Content: Directly below the top section is the central area for the main content.
  • Footer - A single orange bar separates the content and the footer items.

HTML & Cascading Style Sheets

Centrelink's website has been designed using HTML 4.0 and Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) following the W3C universal access guidelines. See our section on Site Accessibility for more details.

Browser Preferences

To view the background images and page formatting on this site check that the option for "style sheets" is activated in your browser. This can be found under 'Tools' - 'Internet Options' in Microsoft's Internet Explorer or under 'Edit' - 'Preferences' in Netscape Navigator. If this function is not available, you may want to update your browser.

JavaScript

Your browser preferences must be set to support JavaScript. JavaScript is a programming language that is currently used to run the interactive features on Centrelink's contact forms. JavaScript is also used on pages in the website that have drop-down menus.

Some older browsers may not fully support JavaScript. However you can contact Centrelink by phone or by writing to us.

Cookies

To successfully use our message service, your web browser must be configured to allow cookies. Cookies are small pieces of information that are stored by your browser in your computer's memory. Once you complete, or cancel, the process of sending a message the cookie is destroyed. If you do not complete, or cancel, the process of sending a message to Centrelink your browser will automatically destroy the cookie after 30 minutes or so - this also happens when you close your browser or turn off your machine.

Screen Resolution

Our website has also been designed to display correctly on low screen resolutions.

Style

The site does not use frames, and is mainly text based for faster download speeds (most pages should load in less than 10 seconds) and to be as accessible as possible for all of our users.

Site Fonts

The standard font used is sans-serif (Verdana or Arial) at 100 per cent. If you would like to change the display font size you can do this by adjusting the preferences in your browser.
